What to Expect From Facelift Surgery

face-lift-candidates-OCOne of the most popular cosmetic rejuvenation procedures in America, facelift surgery typically requires an exceptionally skilled surgeon to produce results that are natural-looking, youthful, and harmonious while maintaining the unique characteristics of the patient. Dr. Ali Sepehr, our experienced facial plastic surgeon, understands that undergoing facelift surgery is a major decision, and he strives to provide a detailed resource to help individuals make well-informed decisions. The first step is understanding what to expect from facelift surgery.

Dr. Sepehr often utilizes the sub-SMAS lift technique during facelift surgery. SMAS stands for superficial musculoaponeurotic system, which refers to the muscle, fat, and connective tissue of the face. By mobilizing this tissue, he can more effectively reposition the skin to a higher, more youthful location. Once the skin is redraped, he can then tighten underlying muscles, trim excess fat, and smooth away deep wrinkles before closing the incisions with fine sutures. Scars typically are well concealed behind the chin and around the ears, and they often heal to the point of being unnoticeable.

Patients may choose to remain in our care overnight following the facelift procedure. Compression garments will be used to support the face as the tissue begins to heal in the new position. Some discomfort, pressure, and swelling are normal, and medication will be provided to help manage these concerns. Some numbness near the ears may occur, though this typically fades with time. Some individuals report a tingling feeling as sensation returns.

The length of downtime will depend on the individual and Dr. Sepehr’s recommendation, though most patients feel comfortable returning to normal activities within one to three weeks. Swelling can often take up to six weeks to dissipate; however, most people will not be able to tell the patient has undergone an operation after about two weeks into the healing process. Final results will not be visible for at least six months and may take as long as a year.

Although the facelift recovery can be a lengthy experience, most patients report a high level of satisfaction with their new, rejuvenated appearance, and results can often last up to ten years.
