Orange County Facial Plastic Surgeon Discusses Combining Procedures with Laser Skin Resurfacing.

According to the latest statistics from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures performed by facial plastic surgeons are rhinoplasty, facelift, and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Dr. Ali Sepehr, an Orange County facial plastic surgeon, says his practice has similar trends and that many patients are electing to combine a surgical procedure with CO2 laser skin resurfacing, BOTOX® Injections and fillers. Dr. Sepehr discusses the popularity of this combination as well as the CO2 laser skin resurfacing procedure.

Dr. Ali Sepehr, a facial plastic surgeon in Orange County, says the most popular procedures he performs at his practice are rhinoplasty, facelift, and eyelid surgery, an observation mirrored by the most recent study from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). The AAFPRS also reports that, in 2010, on average, a facial plastic surgeon performed 153 of these three most popular treatments. Dr. Sepehr says a growing trend at his practice amongst patients has been to combine a procedure such as facelift in Orange County with nonsurgical procedures such as carbon dioxide laser skin resurfacing, BOTOX® Cosmetic, and dermal fillers.

Laser skin resurfacing, also known as laser skin rejuvenation, is a procedure designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, sun damage, and age spots as well as stimulate collagen for more youthful skin growth. Because it is a non-invasive procedure, Dr. Sepehr says many patients are using laser skin resurfacing to improve the appearance of their complexion with minimal recovery time and minimal discomfort. He also adds that a growing number of patients at his practice are choosing to combine the treatment with a surgical cosmetic procedure due to the enhanced benefits that can be achieved.

Dr. Sepehr says for many of his patients seeking a surgical enhancement like a facelift in Irvine, getting BOTOX® injections and laser skin resurfacing treatment during the same appointment can provide an added level of safety and extra boost in the aesthetic results achieved. He also says the benefits of combining surgery with laser skin rejuvenation include less time out of work for consultations and appointments as well as overlapping recovery time so that patients can resume their normal activities more quickly. Dr. Sepehr adds that the results are often significantly more effective, noticeable and higher quality when the procedures are combined:

“Some patients inquire about lifting their neck and getting rid of their jowls and laugh lines around their mouths. I always advise them that while a face lift is good at all those things, it only improves the laugh lines about 50%. When surgeons try to get rid of them completely using just a face lift, they have to pull so hard that their patients end up with a stretched, wind tunnel look. We would never do that and always strive for a natural final result. Therefore, even after an effective, natural face lift, patients may benefit from fillers to decrease the laugh lines between the cheeks and the mouth.”

Dr. Sepehr says eyelid surgery in Irvine is another popular surgical procedure that can be further enhanced by nonsurgical treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers:

“As another example, some patients inquire about excess upper eyelid skin, and lower eyelid bags and wrinkles. While eyelid surgery is effective for all those things, trying to remove the sagging thick skin at the sides of the eyes, along with stretched thin upper eyelid, would yield a visible scar. Getting a BOTOX brow lift can lift that sagging thick skin at the sides of the eyes and help safely open up the eyes further. When it comes to the lower eyelids, trying to completely eliminate wrinkles using just surgical skin removal can lead to excessive skin removal and an unnatural shape of the lower eyelid. Laser skin resurfacing can decrease those wrinkles, safely rejuvenating the lower eyelid and improving the final result.”

Regardless of whether patients elect to combine procedures such as the facelift or rhinoplasty in Irvine with nonsurgical procedures, or consider them individually, choosing the proper practice for treatment is essential to receiving the proper care and results. He says patients should be sure to consult with a highly qualified, board-certified surgeon before undergoing any procedure. “It is only with proper specialized training and experience that a facial plastic surgeon can properly diagnose the reason behind their patients issues and present their patients with all of their options for improvement. Furthermore, it is through that training and experience that a surgeon knows when to be conservative to get the best possible results while maintaining a natural look.”
